Director Spotlight #5: “The Girls”
Born on April 20, 1984, in Tokyo, the director debuted with Dynamite Graffiti (2016), exploring Japan’s GAL culture. His next feature, Goodbye Silence (2018), depicts young people discovering music in a world where it's banned, achieving an extended theater run. In 2019, Melancholic Super Virgin, inspired by the myth that “staying a virgin until 30 grants magical powers,” screened internationally, including at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival. Rolling Marbles (2020), set in Shibuya’s redevelopment, showcases young women chasing their dreams and was featured at Cinequest.
In 2021, his Anomaly short film series won over 11 awards worldwide, with the Anomaly Complete Edition screened at festivals like Torino and Montreal’s Festival du Nouveau Cinéma. His horror-comedy short The Devil’s Gut for Sacrifice was shown at over 35 festivals, including Porto, and won several Best Short Film awards. His latest work, Love Will Tear Us Apart, premiered at the 2023 Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival.
1984年4月20日生まれ、東京都出身。2016年、GAL文化をテーマにした長編映画『黒い暴動』で監督デビュー。その後、『サラバ静寂』（2018年）は音楽が禁じられた世界の若者たちを描き、長期上映を果たす。2019年には都市伝説をテーマにした『魔法少年☆ワイルドバージン』が公開され、ブリュッセルなど多くの国際映画祭で上映された。2020年には渋谷の再開発と夢を追う若者たちの日常を描く『転がるビー玉』を製作、シネクエスト映画祭で上映。2021年の連作短編『異物』シリーズは世界各国の映画祭で11以上の賞を受賞し、完全版も上映された。短編ホラー・コメディ『悪魔がはらわたでいけにえで私』はポルト国際映画祭などで35以上の映画祭に出品され、いくつかの映画祭で最優秀賞を受賞。最新作『Love Will Tear Us Apart』は2023年のブリュッセル国際ファンタスティック映画祭で上映された。
