Born in Maizuru City, Kyoto Prefecture in 1961, ​Shiota has ​been a regular participant in the Locarno International Film Festival since 1999, where two of his films​, ​Moonlight Whisper​​and ​​Dokoni mo Iko​​ were both released simultaneously to high acclaim. In 2003, ​​Yomigaeri​​ became an exceptionally long-running hit. 2005, ​​Canary​​ won the Grand Prix at the Raindance Film Festival. ​In ​2007, ​​Dororo​​ was a big hit. His recent works include ​​I Want to Embrace You: A True Story​​ (14), ​​Day and Night​​ (14), ​​The Wind Wet Woman​ ​(17, Locarno International Film Festival, Young Jury Award), and ​​Sayonara Kuchibiru​ ​(19). He is the author of ​​The Art of Cinema: Why Does Your Direction Capture the Heart​​?​​

961年、京都府舞鶴市生まれ。99年、『月光の囁き』『どこまでもいこう』がロカルノ国際映画祭に正式出品後、二作同時公開され、高い評価を得る。2001年、宮崎あおい主演『害虫』がヴェネチア映画祭現代映画コンペティション部門（現・オリゾンティ部門）出品の後、ナント三大陸映画祭審査員特別賞・主演女優賞を受賞。03年には『黄泉がえり』が異例のロングランヒットとなる。05年、『カナリア』でレインダンス映画祭グランプリ。07年には『どろろ』が大ヒットを記録した。近作に『抱きしめたい・真実の物語』（14）、『昼も夜も』（14）、『風に濡れた女』（17、ロカルノ国際映画祭若手審査員賞）、『さよならくちびる』（19）。著書に『映画術・その演出はなぜ心をつかむのか』がある。
