Director’s Conversation with MAEDA Seira & Nina Coomes
CJFC invited Nina Coomes, a film critic and contributing writer for Chicago READER, to join Dir. Maeda to discuss Maeda’s career and experiences in the Japanese indie film industry. This recorded conversation will be presented on at 7pm CST on Saturday, Feb. 12th.
MAEDA Seira
Born in Tokyo in 1996, she worked as a child actor in dramas, movies, stage shows, and talk shows until the age of 20. After entering university, she made her debut as a film director. The film, Itsuka kagayaite ita kanojo wa was exhibited at MOOSIC LAB 2018, and opened at UPLINK Shibuya and Kichijoji. Her talent has been highly praised by famous directors such as FUAKDA Koji and MOTOHIRO Katsuyuki. This film is her commercial directorial debut.
Nina Coomes
Nina Li Coomes is a Japanese and American writer. She was born in Nagoya, and currently resides in Chicago, where she is a student at the Litowitz MFA & MA in nonfiction. Her writing has appeared in The Atlantic, EATER, and Catapult, among other places. In 2018 she was an Aspen Summer Words Fellow in Memoir, and in 2019 a Tin House Scholar. Her work has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize, a Chicago Review of Books Award, and was listed as a Notable Mention in Best American Travel Writing 2020. She is a film reviewer and regular contributor at the Chicago READER.
